MT WHEELER (13063 ft / 3982 m)

Accessed thru Great Basin National Park, Nevada. Easy trek in summer no doubt. We did this in April, treking up to Wheeler Peak camp Ground (closed for snow) overnight camp and then up and out the next day.

Getting There

Great Basin National Park is open year round and camp sites are $15. From the Upper Lehman camp ground there is a pleasant approximately 5km trail to Wheeler Peak camp ground.  The views of the alpine mountain setting are stunning and plenty of dead fall wood to build a fire for snow melting.

The Climb

We made a real mess of the assent.  With no topo map our plan waste follow a forest trail to a lake and then onto the ridge leading to the summit. In April the trail is still under many feet of snow so an early start was needed to avoid sinking into slushy deep snow. Unfortunately there are two lakes and with no trail to follow we got to the ridge to find it very hard going.  Eventually found the main trail and headed up to the summit.  Rewarded with great views and a good days exercise. No real technical climbing involved... DO NOT FOLLOW THE BELOW TRAIL

A TRIPTOMANIAC has a mental disorder that compels them to travel. Unlike a normal traveller, who will journey because they want or need to, a triptomaniac does it for the sheer fun and thrill.
